Save and open a diagram
Last modified: June 2, 2025
A diagram does not store database object details offline. So, when you open the diagram, dbForge Studio will try to establish a connection with the Microsoft SQL Server database containing objects of the diagram. If you don’t create a connection, the diagram is not opened.
Diagrams do not store database objects locally. Opening a diagram requires dbForge Studio to connect to the associated SQL Server database. If the connection isn’t available, the diagram can’t be opened.
When saved to a file, a diagram stores:
- Server connection details
- Database object names and owners
- Foreign key names displayed as relations
- Virtual relations, if added
- Containers, notes, and stamps
- Diagram configuration options
- Layout settings
When you open a diagram after the database has been modified, it reflects changes to all displayed database objects. New objects aren’t added automatically, and deleted objects are removed from the diagram.
