Connection overview
Last modified: June 2, 2025
A database connection refers to the communication between a user or application and a server, beginning when the connection is established and ending when it is closed. The server stores and provides database data to be manipulated.
dbForge Studio for SQL Server provides a visual and user-friendly interface for managing database connections. The tool allows you to establish a connection to SQL Server and Azure SQL databases through different authentication methods to work with any database-related operations. For more information about the servers to connect, see Requirements.
How the connection works
To begin, you create a connection by specifying the SQL Server instance, authentication method, and database name, and providing user credentials. After that, SQL Server verifies the provided credentials to ensure you have the required permissions to access the database.
Once authenticated, dbForge Studio maintains an active session, allowing you to execute queries, manage data, or perform various database operations in real time without the need to reconnect repeatedly.
dbForge Studio supports multiple simultaneous connections, enabling you to work across different databases and servers efficiently. When you disconnect from a database or close dbForge Studio, the session ends, and the connection is terminated.
